Oaxaca Old Fashioned
The Oaxaca Old Fashioned brings a bold and smoky twist to the timeless Old Fashioned cocktail. Originating from the mezcal-rich region of Oaxaca, Mexico, this variation substitutes traditional bourbon or rye whiskey with a blend of tequila and mezcal. The smoky character of mezcal intertwines with the earthy sweetness of agave syrup, creating a robust and multi-layered drinking experience. Garnished with an orange twist, this cocktail is a homage to the depth and complexity of flavors found in Mexican spirits.
- 1 1/2 oz (45 ml) Reposado tequila
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) Mezcal
- 1/4 oz (7.5 ml) Agave syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Orange twist for garnish
- Large ice cube or ice sphere
In a mixing glass or shaker, combine the reposado tequila, mezcal, agave syrup, and Angostura bitters.
Add ice to the mixing glass and stir well for about 30 seconds to chill the mixture.
Place a large ice cube or sphere in an Old Fashioned glass.
Strain the stirred mixture over the large ice cube in the glass.
Express the oils from an orange twist over the drink by twisting it over the glass, then drop it in as a garnish.
